This figurine of Buddha Shakyamuni was crafted in Tibet in the 18th century. The copper repoussé, partially fire-gild, is characterized by the finely executed details, such as the fingernails or palmar creases. The deity is seated in padmasana on a pedestal. His left hand is placed in his lap with the open palm facing heavenwards. Shakyamuni’s right hand forms the bhumisparsa mudra, the gesture of touching the earth. His palm is turned inward and his fingers point towards the earth. With this gesture, Buddha calls the earth to bear witness to his enlightenment.
The figure is in very good condition with signs of age and wear. The surface is slightly rubbed. In his left hand the gemstone is missing. It is open underneath. The figure measures 18.5 x 11.5 cm. (ggo)
