20. Japanese Export Meiji Cane-Ca. 1890-Gun metal knob elaborately decorated with three color gold and silver inlay in micro detail and high relief, single piece baleen shaft and a metal ferrule. Equally based on artistic creativity and on craftsmanship, this cane is typical for the Meiji period and exemplifies the Japanese paradox: The love of simplicity in tension with the love of intricacy and detail. Furthermore, the quality of the workmanship is underscored by a mint condition and the excessively rare baleen shaft which shows all the dark hues of the organic and noble material of the ocean.-Meiji, meaning “Enlightened Government”, was chosen by Matushito, the 15-year-old child emperor who ruled from 1868-1912. H. 2 ¼” x ¾”, O.L. 35 ½”-$1,800-$2,500
