Animators have fervently studied human movement and emotion for use in their characters, from “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937 to the aliens in “Falling Skies” today. Todd Masters of Masters FX and his special effects team have just upped the ante, by combining cutting-edge technology with animatronic artists and actors such as Doug Jones (who plays Cochise) that bring the Volm creatures sublimely to life. In fact, since E.T. you would be hard pressed to find a more likeable species than the Volm. Honorable and steadfast, the Volm’s wideset eyes bespeak their intelligence and trustworthiness. The actor’s mouth is real, just underneath its Volm exterior, while the final touches such as eye direction, breathing, facial and jaw movement, dynamic breathing, and blinking are all FX-given. That doesn’t diminish the Volm likeability factor however, which is through the roof. The Volm suit and head are so superb, that Cochise (Doug Jones) and Shaq (John DeSantis) truly look like intelligent aliens among us, on their way to a United Nations meeting. Made of latex. Approx. 17" x 12" x 9".
