"The Violet," limited edition sterling and silver-gilt wine goblet, London, 1976, 6 3/4 in. H., in fitted wood box with key, 7.90 ozt. Australian-born Stuart Devlin (b. 1931) ranks as one of the great contemporary gold and silversmiths and has been acclaimed by the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths as the designer with 'the Midas touch'. In 1967 he became one of Britain's respected modern craftsmen-jewelers. His work is displayed in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and his Royal Warrant of Appointment as Goldsmith and Silversmith to Her Majesty the Queen reinforce his achievements. His later designs deliberately used parcel gilding and filigree to be striking and noticeable.
