Full-length portrait of a child attributed to William Matthew Prior. Prior (1806-1873) was born in Bath, Maine. He moved to Boston and established a portrait gallery in 1841 where he worked with his brother-in-law, Sturtevant Hamblin. This portrait, in addition to having a typical red draped backdrop, has the added details of seashells, an Ionic column and a spool of thread the child is holding. Dressed in red, the child wears plaid socks and black laced shoes. Oil on canvas, cleaned and rebacked on board with a few areas of professional restoration. 27"h. 21 1/2"w.
