CHINESE BRONZE LARGE GUARDIAN FU DOG / LION CENSER, seated, the front paw resting on a brocade ball, his tail held aloft, the back with notched cut-out section forming the coal hatch, with glass eyes and holes in nostrils and mouth, for the smoke to appear. Unmarked. Late Qing Dynasty, 19th century. 23 1/4" HOA. Weight: 84 pounds.
Catalogue Note: This lot is sold with a letter dated March 24, 1980, from Thomas Lawton, Director of the Freer Gallery of Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC, in which Mr. Lawton asserts the "foo" dog "can probably be dated to the late Ch'ing dynasty (1644-1911).
