Initialed and signed lower left: W.H.D. / W. Herbert Dunton

This painting en grisaille was published for the interior story "Troop Horse Number One" by Hugh Johnson in Scribner's Magazine, December 1916, p. 725, with the caption, "He roamed the open range of the Panhandle for three years and never saw a man."

We wish to thank the art historian Michael R. Grauer for his gracious assistance in cataloguing this painting, which will be included in his forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the works of William Herbert Dunton.

There appears to be faint craquelure in a few areas, otherwise work remains in good overall condition; under UV exam, there appears to be several tiny dots of inpainting scattered throughout, most notably at center right edge as well as above and below D in 'Dunton'.
