Lot 0021 Details

Description
COFFMAN FAMILY, ROCKINGHAM CO., SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA DECORATED STONEWARE JAR, salt-glazed, "2" gallon capacity mark, ovoid form with collared neck, wide square rim, arched double-groove handles, and clamshell-pattern cut-off lines under base. Brushed cobalt horizontal "Rockingham Tulip" with feathered leaves decoration on each side, additional cobalt surrounding handles. Probably William Carlton Coffman (1822-1896) or his sons William S. Coffman (1846-1912), Edward E. Coffman (1853-1919), and Robert A. Coffman (1855-1920) working near Conrad's Store/Elkton, probably for Henry H. Miller or the Riverton Crock Works. Circa 1850-1880. 12 1/4" H, 7 1/4" D rim.

Catalogue Note: The capacity mark seen on this jar has only been recorded on one other piece which also carries the same attribution.
Condition
Very good condition, minor chip to outer rim, spider crack to base and partially up one side.
