Description
COFFMAN FAMILY, ROCKINGHAM CO., SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA DECORATED STONEWARE JAR, salt-glazed, approximately one-gallon capacity, tall ovoid form with grooved arched handle, collared neck, and beaded squared rim. Slip-trailed and brushed cobalt horizontal floral decoration on each side. Probably Andrew Coffman (1795-1853), working at his Beldor site; or possibly John D. Heatwole (1826-1907) at Coffman's Beldor site. Circa 1850. 10 1/4" H, 5 1/2" D rim.
Published: Evans/Suter - A Great Deal of Stone & Earthen Ware, p. 60, fig. 82.
Provenance: Collection of Maxine and the late Carlton Rinaca, Shenandoah, VA._x000D_
Exhibited: "'A Great Deal of Stone & Earthen Ware,' The Rockingham County, Virginia School of Folk Pottery", Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society, September 7 - December 30, 2004, No. 82 (with exhibition label).
Catalogue Note: Two jars of identical form have been recorded, one stamped for John D. Heatwole (see Kaufman, p. 19, fig. 13) and Andrew Coffman (see Evans/Suter, p. 60, fig. 83). Interestingly, the decoration on this jar features the paired leaves at the base of the stem like on the Heatwole example, along with the multi-petal rounded blossom that is closely associated with Coffman.
Condition
Moderate chip and several flakes to outer edge of rim, otherwise undamaged.
