IMPORTANT LENNAH GRIFFEY (MONONGALIA CO., VIRGINIA - NOW WEST VIRGINIA) PICTORIAL NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, silk on linen, an outstanding example, design featuring a double-chimney house flanked by trees and set on a stitched lawn bordered by a picket fence at front, over a center panel with flower basket flanked by flowering double-handled urns, above a checkered walkway-like device flanked by a short verse, over a single alphabet row and inscription "Lennah Griffey's work. Aged. 12 years. 1826", all within a strawberry-and-vine border. Housed under glass in an old molded wood frame. Circa 1826. 21" x 16" sight, 22 1/2" x 17 3/8" OA.

Provenance: From a Tennessee private collection.
Catalogue Note: Lennah Griffey (born circa 1813) was the daughter of William Griffey and Mary Spitzer. The family resided in Monongalia County in the community which came to be incorporated as Morgantown in 1838. She married Charles Madera in Monongalia Co., Virginia (now West Virginia) in 1831, and the couple migrated to the Iowa Territory in 1837, where she died of yellow fever shortly arriving in their new homeplace. The present example is noteworthy for its large and impressive visual format, its fine condition, and its important family history.
Condition
Very good condition with some fading to stitches and toning to ground. Possible strengthening to stitches in verse.
