Description
True, classic mid century modern sterling silver 5 piece place setting. Reed & Barton 1961 Dimension designed by John Axel Prip. The setting includes a 7 1/2" Dinner Fork, a 7" Individual Salad Fork, a 7" Dessert/Oval Soup Spoon, a 6 1/8" Teaspoon and a 9 1/8" Modern Hollow Knife. Total sterling weight is 225 grams. PROVENANCE: A Charleston South Carolina Private Collection. John Axel Prip (1922-2009), also known as Jack Prip, was a master metalsmith known for setting standards of excellence in American metalsmithing. His works and designs have become famous for bringing together the formal, technical tradition of modern Danish design into harmony with the American desire for innovation. A fourth generation metalsmith, John Prip was born in 1922 in New York City. In 1933 his family moved to Denmark, where his father took over the silversmith shop that was his grandfather’s. During his time in Denmark, Prip continued in metalwork and apprenticed to the silversmith Evald Nielsen while attending Copenhagen Technical College. In 1948. Prip returned to the United States, where he joined the faculty of the silversmithing program at the School for American Craftsmen until 1954. During this time, Prip also founded and was partner in Shop One, a retail craft outlet in Rochester, New York. Prip taught at such institutions as the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Rhode Island School of Design, and he was employed as a designer/craftsman for Reed & Barton. A few of his designs for Reed & Barton are still being produced today, and his work is included in numerous collections, including the Renwick Gallery and the Art Institute of Chicago. Prip died in 2009.
