8" x 10" photo in larger mat, of two African-American aviators, Thomas C. Allen and J. Herman Banning, Co-Pilot and Mechanical Pilot. These two men flew the First Negro Trans-Continental Flight, Los Angeles to New York, October 9th, 1932, Flying time 41 hrs. 27 min. The photo depicts the two aviators standing in front of their open cock-pit airplane, with the stenciling "Negro Pilots, New York" clearly visible. Banning was also the first licensed Black pilot. He died during a stunt maneuver at a San Diego air show the year following this photo. Photo has albumen coloring to it.
