Lot 4131 Details
Description
Details: This lot consists of the original ink drawing shown in the following image(s).
The piece is in two panels, both in black ink on crinkled off-white paper. The upper depicts stylized heavily-laden peasants and a dog moving from right to left away from a schematic Southwestern mission and a solid bare tree. The initials of the artist appear in the lower right corner of this panel. In the lower panel, three donkeys, one carrying a swaddled woman, move from left to right away from walls to a solid spiky desert plant. In a much smaller panel at the lower right of the framed matter, the signature of the artist "Jean Charlot" appears in pencil.
Louis Henri Jean Charlot (February 8, 1898 – March 20, 1979) was a French and naturalized American painter and illustrator, active mainly in Mexico and the United States.
To inspect and acquire more detailed information about this lot, please attend our live preview before the auction.
Condition / Notes: The actual dimensions of the images in this original ink drawing are 14" x 3 1/2". The dimensions of the panel containing the artist's signature are 2 1/2" x 5/8". At the top right of the top image is a small arc of ink, possibly a portion of a circle mostly concealed by the matte. The ink in the "C" of the artist's initials in the top panel is slightly blurred. On the other side of the paper in the bottom panel, the words "Mrs. Lipseo," upside down and inverted, are visible. There is a small area in the lower panel where the paper is missing entirely, and the ink on the rightmost donkey has blurred. The images and artist's signature are enclosed in a cream-colored professionally cut matte, and outside of this is a thin black wooden frame 1/2" on all sides, and 1/2" deep. The artwork is protected by acrylic. Hanging hardware is present in the back.
