At the beginning of the 1950s, the Italian artist Mimmo Rotella began to work with advertising or old film posters ripped down from public spaces and walls. He created abstract-expressionist collages and décollages that established a new aesthetic approach. In the 1980s he gradually painted phrases and images on top of his works, as it had similarly been practiced by pioneering artists like Robert Rauschenberg. The present composition is titled ‘Lo stivaletto’ and reveals the picture of a single lady’s shoe on a poster background. The work proves to be a characteristic example of Rotella’s artistic output.

Condition:

The paper is laid down on canvas; the signature is somewhat faded due to light exposure, otherwise the work is in very good condition. The décollage measures 39 x 59 cm, the framed dimensions are 42 x 62 cm.
