President Jefferson Davis Signed Letter
Item Details
Description
4 hand written documents regarding the Jefferson Davis Fast Day Proclamation. -Included in this lot is an autographed letter written and signed by Jefferson Davis as president, to Senator John William Clark Watson. This letter dated March 8th, 1856 explains the outrage at his proclamation is to be expected when the Constitution fails to explicitly recognize Jesus Christ. An excerpt of the letter reads: “I inclose to you two letters, that you may see how well founded was my apprehension that evil would result from presenting the …day of fast… many, perhaps, do not know the signature of the Secretary of State is a form properly observed in proclamations… when issued by the President… our Constitution should not only have recognized a God, as it does, but the Saviour of mankind also; and my oath binds me to observe the Constitution as it is, not as I would have it,…”-Also in this lot are two letters President Jefferson Davis received and included with his letter to the Senator. These anonymous letters severely criticized the omission of Jesus Christ/ "God the Son" and infer that Davis was trying "to please a Godless & prayerless (Jewish) Sect'y of State"-4th document is a description of the proclamation and of all the letters included. "Under date of January 25, 1865, when the affairs of the Confederate States had reached a hopeless condition, President Jefferson Davis, by Proclamation, appointed a day of public fasting, humiliation and prayer, with Thanksgiving to Almighty God for blessings received. The Proclamation was attested by Judah P. Benjamin, Secretary of State, a learned, brilliant and patriotic Jew.
