Description
Russia, 18th to 19th century CE. This is a pair of stamped brass icon panels showing religious scenes -- one the Crucifixion and the other the Resurrection. This style of icon is known as a "travelling" icon, which could be carried by priests; this time period saw missionary efforts throughout the vast Russian landmass and into neighboring territories like Japan and China, so having portable items for worship was important. Size: 9.6" W x 13.6" H (24.4 cm x 34.5 cm).

Provenance: Ex. M. Reiniger collection, Chicago, IL
