Christie’s May 22, 2008, $29,368. The Collection of Lord & Lady Impey. The largest and most impressive 18th century effort to document the natural history of India was undertaken by Sir Elijah Impey and his wife, Mary Read. By the time Lady Impey (1749-1818) was recalled to London in 1782, a total of 326 works on paper, 197 of them birds, formed a unique and highly important collection of original Indian artwork.
