Lot 0266
A complete and exceptionally rare form of cusped type, likely introduced to Europe by contact with Central Asian nomadic horsemen. The classic hilt with cylindrical Oakeshott type H pommel and flattened rectangular-section type 2 crossguard with raised ecusson. The broad, straight blade shows excellent forging; hollowground for virtually its entire width, beginning at the spine and developing into a chamfered cutting edge which continues all the way around the periphery of the concave and acutely-pointed tip. Very good excavated condition. 1250-1350. The Romance of Alexander, a manuscript dating 1338-1344 and noted for its miniature paintings, depicts precisely similar falchions. See the Collection of the Bodleian Library, Oxford, http://manuscriptminiatures.com/4373/7031/ Overall length 78cm. Condition V
