RARE WORK CONTAINING THE LIFE OF CAGLIOSTRO AND THE DESCRIPTION OF SOME RITUALS OF FREEMASONRY

Barberi, Giovanni. Camera Apostolica, 1791.

8vo (180x118 mm), modern half leather binding, with marbled paper at boards, gilt title at spine; pp. 216.

Passano [Anonime e pseudonime (1887 ed.), p. 77] attributes this work to "mons. Barbéri." Lattanzi attributes it to "Barbèri, Francesco Mons." Haven attributes it to "P. Marcello jésuite." It is now generally attributed to Giovanni Barberi.

The most truthful biography of Cagliostro written by Barbieri, who was an instructor of the famous trial held in Rome, against the Sicilian adventurer. For the investigation the Author made use of the inaccessible records in possession of the Holy Inquisition.
The first part of this work, divided into four sections, deals with the life of Cagliostro; the second, with the history of Freemasonry and the "Egyptian Rite" invented by him; the third, with relations between Cagliostro and the Masonic circles, and finally the last part, about the Roman lodge.

Barberi, Giovanni (1748-1821) was a Roman jurist; in 1780 Pius VI appointed him general tax government.
