Lot 0217
AN AFRICAN TRIBAL INCISED GOURD FORM MUSICAL INSTRUMENT ON CARVED EBONY STAND, 20TH CENTURY, the long necked gourd body centering a large band of stylized crisscross weave decoration on a fine line crosshatched ground, above an idealized waves neck collar over a conforming ring of interlocking bands on crosshatched ground, length: 12 5/8"; on a collapsible tripod stand with intricately detailed heads centering scarification carving, on flattened monopodiae ending in human form feet, height: 11", diameter: 7 1/2".

Good condition, the gourd instrument has some light surface wear and a hole piercing on the body as well as a few tiny holes on the long neck, the neck end has a circular opening and probably was plugged after filling with dried beans or small stones to make a "castaneta" like instrument.
