AN HANDWRITTEN TREATISE OF CHRISTIAN APOLOGETICS, AIMED TO DEFEND THE CHRISTIAN TRUTH AGAINST THE HERETICS AND THE SCHISMATICS, WRITTEN TOWARDS THE END OF THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY
Anonymous. Verità della Chiesa Cattolica, Apostolica, e Romana provata contro gli Eretici, e gli Scismatici. N.p. – n. y. [but end 1700].
Manuscript on paper, 234x172 mm, contemporary marbled paper binding, with handwritten title on a label glued at front board; 156 leaves [13 numbered quires, each one of 12 leaves (“sesterni”)], with the last 5 pages left blank.
Text in Italian, divided in chapters, with marginal notes. Presence of corrections, erasures and underlining of the text.
The Author is anonymous, but quite for sure, he was a highly educated priest, a theologian, who lived in the eighteenth century.
The work has no date, but it should have been written towards 1770, because in the text is mentioned the French King Louis XV (who died in 1774) and the acts of an assembly held in 1765. Furthermore, it follows the style of similar works of end eighteenth century, like for instance the apologetic treatise written by Antonino Valsecchi (“La verità della Chiesa Cattolica Romana”, Padova, 1787).
