Description
West Africa, Burkina Faso, Lobi peoples, early 20th century CE. This is an iron blade in the billhook style with a curved blade that is sharp on one side and has a small hook at the end; the handle of the blade is in the shape of a decorative, long, conical bell. These are ritual objects rather than utilitarian ones. The artistry of the bell decoration -- with dangling tool-shaped designs -- is particularly interesting. Size: 15.5" L x 3.2" W (39.4 cm x 8.1 cm)
Provenance: Ex- Adeon Gallery, Nick Poolos collection, Chicago, IL collected before 1975
