Description

A Continental brown japanned longcase clock Unsigned, 18th century and later Now with 19th century French Comtoise type steel posted movement with trains set side by side, the going train with anchor escapement regulated by seconds pendulum via offset cranked crutch set behind the dial, the strike train with vertical rack and vertically pivoted hammer sounding on a bell mounted above the top plate, the earlier 14 by 13 inch rectangular brass dial with vestigial subsidiary seconds dial to the matted centre within applied silvered Roman numeral chapter ring with stylised sword hilt half hour markers and Arabic five minutes to outer track, with pierced steel hands and gilt cartouche and scroll cast spandrels to angles, in a brown japanned case with inverted breakronted parapet upstand and conforming frieze decorated in polychrome and gilt with chinoiseries over glazed hood door applied with Doric strip pilasters further decorated with gilt floral sprays to angles, the sides matching the front with pilasters flanking glazed apertures, the trunk with arcade painted convex throat moulding and raised figural decorated frieze over full-width trunk door inset with a mirror panel, the surround with quadrant panels to angles decorated with further figures and gilt floral trails, the sides with recessed panels incorporating conforming raised chinoiseries, on garden landscape fronted plinth base with shallow skirt and squat bracket feet, (decoration restored, movement not original to dial), 228cm (89.75ins) high.
