Bettina Rheims (b. 1952)
The career of the photographer, who was born in 1952 close to Paris, began with photographs of Parisian strippers in 1978. She worked for fashion magazines and advertisement agencies and published several volumes of photographs since 1991. The theme that coins her work is the female body that she often stages in voyeuristic situations. Rheims extended the theme to the aspect of transsexuality/transgender within the frame of her photo series ‘Modern Lovers’ in 1993. Bettina Rheims received the Grand Prix de la Photographie of the City of Paris in 1994 and she received the commission to create the official portrait of the new French president Jacques Chirac in 1995.
