From the left to the right portion of the image, the photo shows Jefferson Davis Jr. (1857-1878), Margaret (b. 1855), William Howell (1861-1872), and Varina Anne (“Winnie,” 1864-1898). Not shown here are Samuel Emory Davis (1852-1854) and Joseph Evan Davis (1859-1864). Later ink notation in lower portion of image (the last name of the recipient is not legible, but likely “The children of Pres. & Mrs Jefferson Davis/ to/ Sen- Watson.” ++ Photograph of Jefferson and Varina Howell Davis. Inked in lower portion of image by a later owner: “Pres & Mrs. Davis to Sen Watson." Penciled on back of mount: "Byars Coontz" [Virginia Byars Coontz Caldwell] (1901-1999) These photos were acquired by Henry S. Preston (1841-1902), who was a law student at Washington College (now Washington & Lee) in Lexington, VA, during Robt. E. Lee’s time as Washington College’s President. Preston later practiced law in Abingdon, VA. The photos were inherited by Virginia Byars Coontz Caldwell (1901-99), Henry Preston’s first cousin, twice removed.++ Both images 5 3/8 x 4 1/8 in. Minor foxing and staining. Minor wear to edges of images, corners slightly clipped, mounts show surface wear from earlier frames.
