Unusual Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Mug, Stamped "ATLANTIC GARDEN / 50 / BOWERY", New York City or New York State origin, circa 1860, barrel-form mug with cobalt-highlighted banding, impressed with the cobalt-highlighted advertising, "ATLANTIC GARDEN / 50 / BOWERY" within a cartouche. Atlantic Garden was a beer and music hall established in New York City's Bowery by William Kramer in 1858. Popular with German immigrants, it was housed in the building that originally held the colonial-era Bull's Head Tavern. George Washington used the tavern as a temporary headquarters in 1783 as British troops evacuated Manhattan. Two 1 1/4" cracks from rim. Rim chips. H 5 3/8".
