To supplement the bride's dowry, the groom's family presented a wedding chest or "Lion Case", filled with small valuables. This hinged wood chest is hand painted with an image of a stylized lion/ foo dog, symbolic of the groom's virile male figure and happiness. Circa 1900. Some wear, imperfections and chipping of paint.
