Description
This oil painting depicts the Parisian skyline from a distant hill, overlooking the various trees and expanse. Its skyline is primarily white with the occasional building standing out, like the domed one near the center. Clouds are drawn in shades of gray at the bottom with puffy white along the top. The back of the stretcher has been penned "Vue de Paris", in period script: pres de Meudon par Corot on the top center. It has a his signature to the right of that. On the lower side of the stretcher are the numbers: "29525". A label verso of Herman Wunderlich & Co. 868 Broadway. This gallery opened in 1874, in 1912 the gallery was renamed Kennedy & Co. and later in the 1950's renamed Kennedy Galleries. Provenance: This painting belonged to Charles Harrison Tweed. It was probated from his estate in 1917 where it was, according to his daughter, on loan to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts. It came back into the possession of the grandson of Charles Harrison Tweed. Until now, it was in the possession of a private collector in New York. Housed in the original gilt frame.

Width (In.): 19
Depth (In.): 1
Size: 9.25 x 13.0"
Maker: Jean-Baptiste Corot
Material: Oil on Canvas
Date: 19th C.
Provenance:
Condition: Unlined, some craquelure, in-paint to the upper right 1 1/2" x 2 3/4" in a triangular shape(tested and is able to be removed), also some fine brush strokes of in-paint along the bottom of the clouds(likely able to be removed), similar fine brush strokes scattered about the sky. Discolored varnish. Would greatly benefit from a good restorer's hand.
History: The son of a Parisian shopkeeper, the young Corot was hired as a salesman by a cloth merchant, despite his evident gift for drawing. Clearly lacking an aptitude for business, he was already twenty-six when his father gave him an allowance so that he could devote himself entirely to his vocation. Studying with A. Michallon, with whom he painted his first landscapes in the Forest of Fontainebleau, and then with Victor Bertin, he took his first trip to Italy in 1825. There he enjoyed the friendship of Caruelle d'Aligny and Edouard Bertin who shared his passion for painting from nature. On his return three years later, he adopted a pattern of work, which he maintained throughout his life, of painting in his Paris studio during the winter and devoting the summer to traveling in France, interrupted by frequent visits to Ville d'Avray, Chailly and Barbizon. From spring to autumn, he lived with his parents at Ville d'Avray. He worked in the mornings and evenings, capturing the light and atmosphere of his favorite times of day. He was an extremely kind and generous man much loved by his fellow artists, whom he was always ready to help with money and advice. During his long career he became one of the most celebrated artists of his generation and exerted tremendous influence on the painters of the Impressionist movement. He was awarded numerous medals and the coveted Legion of Honor in 1846. Acknowledged as the world's foremost landscape painter, fame did not spoil the simplicity of his character. His work can be found in important public collections around the world.
