WILLIAM PIERCE STUBBS (ME/MA, 1842-1909) - Portrait of the Three Mast Wooden Hulled Schooner "Harry Prescott" passing a lighthouse, oil on canvas, signed lower left, in the original gesso frame, now painted gold and missing its outer edge. OS: 28" x 42", SS: 21 1/2" x 35 1/2". Good condition, relined inpainting in sail area. Article verso from 1958 indicates this was gifted to George W. Torrey from the Deer Isle firehouse during renovation because this was his father's ship. Also marked in pencil: "Home port New Haven, Conn., E.H. Webber Co., Capt. Walter Gray, received by Capt. George W. Torrey, Master, 1902, Deer Isle, Me. G.W. Torrey, Jr., 1958". Wrecked Jan 19, 1912 on Cape Hatteras, while hauling salt, all seven crew rescued over the course of a thirty hour storm.
