Ancient Mediterranean, Phoenicia, Archaic period, 7th to early 5th century BCE. Wonderful steatite (soapstone) scarab with a design of an ipotane, with the hindquarters of a horse and a human front quarters - this might also be an eartly centaur - that reflects the wide trading network and cultural influences of the Phoenicians. Pierced for suspension. Size: 0.75" L x 0.55" W (1.9 cm x 1.4 cm)
