A gilt brass mounted Boulle table clock The case and dial probably South German, mid 18th century, the movement later Now with French eight-day two train countwheel bell striking movement with anchor escapement regulated by heavy disc bob pendulum, the backplate stamped with circular trademark J. B. BEGUIN, PARIS, the earlier circular gilt brass dial with matted centre within blue on white enamel Roman numeral cartouche chapter ring incorporating scroll-cast borders inset with paste jewels to inner margin and Arabic five minutes to outer track, the lower margin indistinctly engraved L. Barth, in a cut and engraved brass and red-stained tortoiseshell marquetry veneered case of tapered section with cast gilt seated cherub surmount to the concave-sided upstand over fine cavetto cast break-arch cornice and foliate strapwork panel decorated top panels, the front with bead-bordered full-height shaped arch door enclosing dial and contra-parti veneered rear door over geometric tile base panel, the apron with flanked by slender brass strung and edged outswept canted angles continuing to form tall scroll supports decorated leafy sprays, the sides with rectangular glazed panels, the rear angles with conforming slender uprights and integral scroll supports, on lobed urn-shaped feet, 53.5cm (21ins) high. The design of the case of the current lot, with its distinctive slender angles continuing down to form in-turned scroll supports, is typical of mid to late 18th century South German practice. The quality of the cast mouldings to the cornice and the engraved brass marquetry decoration would suggest that it was possibly made in one of the better Munich workshops.
