Northwestern Europe, Viking, ca. 9th to 11th century. Over the years we have had the pleasure of handling some of the finest Viking material on the market. This includes helmets, swords, shield bosses, knives, axes, locks and of course torque, rings and bracelets - in gold and silver. This massive arm band ranks among the finest and most important of them all. In all likelihood, owned by a royal warrior just based on the size alone. Twisted solid silver ending on each side with a squarish terminus wrapped with flattened silver wire and decorated with cross-hatch design. The crevices of the twisted section are further enhanced with small added wire with chevron pattern. The weight of this incredible arm band is 498 grams, or one pound, 1-1/2 ounces (17.56 ounces). Inner diameter is 3-3/4 inches so it will fit most men on their forearms or biceps. Size: 4.75" W x 4.5" H (12.1 cm x 11.4 cm).
Provenance: Ex-private UK collection formed in the period between 1980 and 1990.
