Chinese gilt wood shrine figure. C.1780-1800. From Foshan, Guangdong province (Old: Fatshan, Kwangtung). Red and gilt wood figure. Depicting an European merchant carrying a large double gourd shape bag, standing on an elephant, with matching stand. 13 1/4"h x 8 1/2"w x 4 1/2"d.
Notes: This item was formerly part of the Judith and Arthur Hart Burling Collection. The Burlings are the authors of "Chinese Art" published in 1955. The item was mentioned in two articles including in the "China Journal" (April 1941) and in the "Apollo" (January 1946). In the "China Journal", the description (under the picture of this piece) reads: "Gilt lacquer figure of a European found in a temple at Fatshan. Early nineteenth century. In the collection of the authors."
