Judith Cotton (Australian/New York, b. 1941), "Rain Forest", 1985, acrylic and mixed media on canvas, signed, dated and artist label with title en verso, 65 in. x 48 1/2 in., period frame. Provenance: Property of the New Orleans Museum of Art, Sold to Benefit the Acquisitions Fund. Note: An Australian-born painter, Judith Cotton came to the United States in 1971, later becoming an American citizen in 2000. Initially, her work focused on figurative painting, but she eventually abandoned that style in the 1970s and 1980s for a more abstract aesthetic. The painting offered here is an example of her abstract style with expressive, dripping brushstrokes on a dark and moody background. This canvas showcases gravity’s influence on paint, with long, vertical drips extending to the bottom of the painting surface and capturing the spontaneity of the artist’s gestures.
