A French Silver Mounted Glass Claret with Trompe L'oeil Design, late 19th century
Marks: (Minerva head), (Mercury), (anchor-cup-II-V)
9-5/8 inches high (24.4 cm)

The claret having silver spout and handle in organic trompe l'oeil motif, lid surmounted by pinecone finial and leaf-form thumbrest, upper collar in barrel form with pinecone and leaf motif, figural spout depicting head of Bacchus, branch-form handle descending to lower foliate collar around bulbous waisted glass body, terminating on hobstar to underside.

Note: The existence of the "Mercury" mark indicates that this piece was intended for immediate export after its creation.

Condition

Dent to lid near spout from what appears to be initial assay stamp attempt, underside of lid engraved 1886-1936, light dirt accretions, some scratching and scuffing to body with light fleabiting ot hobstar to underside.
