Three Bone Objects

Bone, pigments

Lega art is connected with the Bwami society. An object can have a specific meaning or can represent an individual in a skit or story, embody a proverb or represent some aspect of the human condition. Taken together, art objects exemplify the moral philosophy of Bwami. As one progresses upward in Bwami--a lifelong process for men and women--fewer proverbs are used and meanings become more dense. Objects made of ivory or elephant bone are used by the highest ranks. Spoons often symbolize women, with the spoon bowl standing for the head and the handle standing for the body.
