Description
Union Cartes-de-Visite: George Jerrison Stannard, David Sloane Stanley, William Sprague, John W. Sprague, Henry Warner Slocum, William Farrar Smith and Charles Ferguson Smith . Eight (8) cartes including an unmarked full-standing George Jerrison Stannard (1820-1886); David Sloane Stanley (1828-1902) by Webster & Brother, Louisville; an unmarked William Sprague (1830-1915); John T. Sprague (1810-1878) by S. H. Hartwell, De Kalb, Illinois; two (2) of Henry Warner Slocum (1827-1894), one standing by Brady's National Portrait Gallery, and the other three-quarter image by E. & H.T. Anthony, New York; William Farrar Smith (1824-1903); and Charles Ferguson Smith (1807-1862). The cartes of William Smith and Charles Smith are by Anthony, New York, from negatives from Brady's National Portrait Gallery. Stannard was wounded at Fort Harrison (losing an arm), Cold Harbor and Petersburg. He led the 2nd and 9th Vermont Infantry. He fought at Wilson's Creek, New Madrid, Island No. 10, Corinth, Atlanta, Kennesaw Mountain, Jonesboro and Franklin (severely wounded while leading a charge). He was very effective as Chief of Cavalry of the Army of the Cumberland. John W. Sprague won the M.O.H. for his actions at Decatur, served as a railroad executive in the post-war period and co-founded the city of Tacoma. He was Colonel of the 63rd Ohio Infantry, fighting at Corinth, Iuka, Vicksburg and Atlanta. He masterfully held off an overwhelming force at Decatur, Georgia, thereby saving the entire ordnance and supply trains of four corps. Slocum was Colonel of the 27th New York Infantry. He fought at First Bull Run (severely wounded), South Mountain, Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Chickamauga and the March to the Sea. William Smith's career was marred by acrimonious disputes with Ben Butler and George Meade. He fought at the Peninsula, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Chattanooga, serving as Chief Engineer of the Department of the Cumberland. Charles Smith played an influential role in the capture of Forts Henry and Donelson, but died two months later when a scraped shin wound became infected. From the collection of Dr. Michael Krane.
