Stunning Roman red-ware tondo depicting fighting scene

Lot 0146A
A stunning Roman red-ware tondo depicting a fighting scene, North Africa, c. 4th – 5th Century AD. The fantastic scene depicts a man fighting of a lion and bear with an axe, while a dog also attacks the bear. The nude male appears to be standing on a helmet, likely indicating that this may be a gladiatorial scene. The symbol of the Silphium seed appears in the center below the scene, a good indication that this piece was produced in the North African city of Cyrene, whose main export was the Silphium plant, and the seed symbol was used to mark many of the products produced in the city. D: 5 in (12.7cm). Ex collection of William Major Tedder.
