Martin Munkacsi was a Hungarian photographer born in 1863. He worked mainly in Germany and then later in New York City. Munkacsi started his career as a sports photographer, creating innovative compositions for action shots. His body of work went on to also include fashion and street photography. In the 1930's, he moved to New York and became a photographer for Harper's Bazaar. His famous portraits include Katharine Hepburn, Joan Crawford, Louis Armstrong, and the definitive dance photograph of Fred Astaire.
