    Petronius, or Gaius Petronius Arbiter (27 AD - 66 AD), was a Roman courtier during the reign of Nero. He is attributed to writing the satirical novel Satyricon, one of the most extensive witnesses to the Roman novel, as well as useful evidence for the reconstruction of how lower classes lived during the early Roman Empire.
