Description

A Complete Set of Vintage Kutani Moriage Seven Lucky Gods, 20th Century c. 1930-1950. Enameled and gilt-painted to depict Hotei, Jurojin, Fukurokuju, Bishamonten, Benzaiten, Daikokuten and Ebisu, one marked with impressed hallmark to the base. All approximately 6" tall. Weight combined is 4 pds. The Seven Gods of Fortune (Shichi Fukujin), commonly referred to in English as the Seven Lucky Gods, are the seven gods of good fortune in Japanese mythology and folklore. They are some of the most widely worshipped, prayed to and wished upon Japanese gods in modern times, with figurines or masks of them being especially commonplace in small businesses throghout Japan. Excluding Ebisu, six of the Seven Lucky Gods originated in Indian and Chinese myths and folklore and later entered Japanese lore through Chinese influence starting from the 6th century AD.
