Two-Gallon Vertical-Handled Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Watchspring Decoration, Manhattan, NY or Cheesequake, NJ origin, late 18th century, ovoid jar with applied vertical handles, footed base, and tooled shoulder, decorated on the front and reverse with a slip-trailed watchspring motif. This design is accented with spots on one side and swag-like details on the reverse. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals and band around midsection. Excellent form and decoration. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Hairlines on underside, continuing onto base. Three of these lines extend further onto body of jar, measuring approximately 6 1/4", 5 3/4", and 4 1/2" from base. A small rim chip. A thin crack and hairline through one handle.
