Rare Sponge-Decorated Redware Cake Crock with Lid, Stamped "J. BELL," John Bell, Waynesboro, PA, circa 1840, straight-sided crock with tooled banding and early-style, drooping tab handles. Decorated with two rows of manganese sponging over a yellowish ground, the entire surface covered in a clear lead glaze. Includes original lid with manganese sponging around border and covering stepped knob. Both crock and lid stamped "J. BELL." Attractive color. A fine and rare example of John Bell's early work in Waynesboro. Crock with base chips and glaze wear to surface. Lid with two spots of glaze loss to surface, minor wear to knob, and three chips to underside. H (including lid) 7 1/2" ; Diameter 8 3/4".
