9 Maya 1946 [Victory Day, 1946], a poster by Alexei Godov (1919-1972). Rostov branch of the Soviet Art Fund, 1946, 55 ? 82 cm.
An attractive poster. The prominently-displayed medal with inscription “Our Cause Was Just — We Won” (the “Victory over Germany” medal) was awarded to every soldier that served in the war and every civilian that worked for the Red Army.
Graphic artist Alexei Godov served in the Red Army during WWII. Afterwards he worked in Rostov, and later in another southern city, Maikop. He was considered a gifted portraitist, and took part in a number of regional exhibitions. In the late 1950s, Godov found a job in Moscow, becoming an artist for Diafilm studio, which produced film strips. He also worked as a book illustrator. We have not seen other Godov posters, but he produced many illustrated postcards, among them quite a few in the “portraits of famous people” category.
