Lot 1111
Boxer figure made at Rookwood in 1944 and arrayed in natural colors in high glaze. Impressed with the Rookwood symbol and the date. There is no crazing but there are minor glaze inconsistencies at the plinth and a single, tiny open glaze bubble on his back. Legend has it that the president of the B. Altman Company, a Rookwood retail outlet in N.Y., commissioned 24 of these figures as gifts. There is no shape number so we can surmise that they were not intended to be part of regular production. Size is 10 1/2 inches by 9 inches. This boxer is pictured in Nicholson-Thomas on page 113. From the Estate of Jim Fleming.
