Large and important Carved Mat glaze vase done by Sallie Toohey for Rookwood in 1907. Pictured are bright red poppies with vivid green stems in high relief from the body. The flowers stand out from the body as much as 3/8th of an inch in places. There are two poppies on the front and with two more on the back along with seed heads and interconnecting stems. The glazes have mingled and interacted in beautiful and amazing ways. Marks include the Rookwood logo, the date, shape number 581 B and an intact Rookwood paper label whose price cannot be read. Toohey's conjoined initials grace the front of the vase near the base. Height 16 1/2 inches. Uncrazed with a touch up to a small glaze skip on the rim. There are also some grinding chips at the base, one of which is slightly visible from the side.
