Lot 0008
Greece, Hellenistic, ca. 3rd to 1st century BCE. A miniature terracotta head depicting a goddess, possibly Aphrodite, the goddess of romantic love, with her head tipped ever so slightly to the left, her visage presenting veristic facial features, and a fanciful coiffure with hair pulled back in segmented tresses to a neat chignon at the nape of her neck. The goddess' elegant, oval face is sensitively modeled so as to present naturalistic features, this realism being very characteristic of the Hellenistic period, with a rounded forehead, large and generously lidded almond-shaped eyes, a fine browline that arches gracefully and merges with the bridge of her nose, a soft rounded chin, and full, bow-shaped, pursed lips. A stunning example of Hellenistic artistry. Custom stand. Size: 1.5" L x 1" W x 1.5" H (3.8 cm x 2.5 cm x 3.8 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Peter Arnovick collection, San Francisco, CA
