China, Sui Dynasty, ca. 581 to 618 CE. This charming pair of court ladies known as Ladies of Fashion is mostly straw glazed with areas left unglazed where original polychrome was applied. The white slip remains and some very slight trace of color. The straw glazing in the Sui Dynasty was the origin of celadon, so admired later. Though the two beautiful ladies are Chinese, their elegant draping shows the western influence due to the silk route. Chinese women enthusiastically adopted foreign dress, fashion and hair styles. This graceful pair certainly make a fashion statement. Size: 8.75" H (22.2 cm)
