Portugal, ca. 19th century CE. A large, antique carved wooden crucifix with a dramatic depiction of Jesus upon the cross that is inscribed with the initials "JNRJ" (the Latin acronym for Jesus Nazarenus Rex Judaeorum) painted in black on white at the top, with wooden pegs through Christ's palms and feet and a laceration to his chest over his heart, all locii of his stigmata. Christ's body is painted a pale white with red blood streaming from his wounds, donning a black loin cloth, his black-haired visage conjuring at once sorrow and tranquility. The cross is painted black and mounted upon a stepped base surmounted by one spherical orb (perhaps symbolizing the universe) at the corner. Size: 11.5" W x 21" H (29.2 cm x 53.3 cm)
