This lot is for a fantastic piece of 1959 Boston Red Sox Original Art. The piece shows the new manager for the Red Sox in 1959, Bill Jurges. The piece shows the Red Sox with their "aging stars" and "so-so pitching" looking at the other team's mascots above them.It also has a Bill Jurges' High Hopes song/poem. This is an original piece of art by Vic Johnson who was a very well known artist for the Boston Herald Newspaper. This is a pretty large piece of art, measuring 15 inches by 16 inches, and is signed by Johnson.Vic Johnson was a longtime Boston sports cartoonist, who gave the Boston Red Sox - in the long interval between their pennants of 1946 and 1967 - the nickname, "The Little Rich Kids." Jurges had an interesting episode as a player in 1938, where he was shot by a showgirl, in an attempted murder suicide, only to recover and appear for the Cubs later that year in the World Series. There is speculation that this episode is a part of the basis for the movie the Natural, although it is widely believed that the story is based on Eddie Waitkus. Just a great piece of vintage original Red Sox art.
